How to Be a Trip Sitter: Supporting Someone Through Their At-Home Session
By Shalom Posternak · 6 min read
Your job is simple: be calm, be present, stay sober.
Being a trip sitter for someone receiving ketamine treatment at home can be a rewarding experience. Your person is doing real work, and your presence is part of what makes it safe.
You do not need medical training. Every Online Ketamine Clinic program includes a Sitter Agreement, a pre-session prep call, and unlimited messaging with the care team. Your job is simpler than you think: be calm, be present, stay sober.
Before the Session
Understand the plan. Read the Sitter Agreement and know what a session looks like: about two hours, eyes closed, music on. If you have questions, the care team answers them on the prep call.
Prepare the space together. Help set up a quiet room: blanket, water, tissues, a small basin in case of nausea. Dim lights. Phones silent.
Plan your hours. Clear your schedule for the session and check in with your person afterward. Do not plan to squeeze in errands.
During the Session
Stay in the room (or nearby). Your presence is the safety net. You do not need to talk or entertain. Sit quietly, read a book, just be there.
If your person becomes emotional or moves restlessly, a calm hand on the shoulder or a few quiet words are usually all the support they need.
Stay sober. No alcohol or anything else that could slow your reaction. You are the one who responds if something unexpected happens.
Do not guide the experience. This is their journey. Unless they ask for help, let the session unfold. Your stillness is more valuable than your advice.
Keep an eye on practical things. Timing the session, keeping the room quiet, having water ready when they come back.
When They Come Back
Offer water and a soft landing. Sessions are tiring. Let them rest, hydrate, and share as much or as little as they want.
Listen more than you talk. If they want to talk about what came up, listen without analyzing. “That sounds really meaningful” goes a long way.
Encourage the integration call. The care team’s follow-up is part of the program. Help protect that time.
Watch the next 48 hours. No driving or major decisions after a session. Gentle company helps.
Your One Job
Everything above reduces to one thing: make the room feel safe. The medicine does the work, the care team handles the clinical side, and you hold the space. Sitters who relax into that role give their person the best gift of all: the freedom to let go and do their work.

⚕ Important Medical Note
I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. Ketamine treatment requires a thorough, individual evaluation by a qualified medical professional. Sitters should follow the guidance of the patient’s care team at all times.
